It's All In the "Jeans"

It’s all in the “Jeans”

There are so many different styles of composers. When I tried to relate the different kinds, all I could think of was that there are as many different composing styles as there are different styles of jeans. The link below is to the online site for GAP, a major jean retailer, who markets to all different types of customers with a wide range of styles to choose from. On the moving banner toward the top of the page, there is a scroll of all of the styles they offer. Each can be related to a composing style.

-Legging Jean: This composer hugs in all the right places, meaning they follow the topic assigned. Though this is flattering, it doesn’t allow for any breathing room, or creativity.

-Always Skinny: This composer tries to get to the point in a concise manner, always. This could be good if you’re looking for the facts, but it doesn’t give any extra embellishment or details.

-Real Straight: This is the perfect marriage of the previous and next styles. This composer is clean and focused yet creative and a little daring. It takes a strong foundation and plenty of practice as well as a willingness to step outside the box in order to rock this style.

-Curvy: While there is nothing especially wrong with this style, it seems to be a cop out. This composer just does whatever is easiest, instead of finding the perfect fit.

-Sexy Boot: This style is definitely rare, as the composer needs the perfect combination of confidence and sense. However, this may not be appropriate for every genre or situation that may arise in the composer’s environment.

-Perfect Boot: This fit, while supposedly “perfect”, is possibly a little too much. The extensive flare suggests that this composer may be focused entirely on creativity and not concerned with other important aspects of composing.

-Long and Lean: The composer that relates to long and lean is that person who talks to hear the sound of their voice. While the extra length is appreciated, it can sometimes get caught dragging the piece down.

At the beginning of this class, I think I was definitely a “Legging Jean” kind of composer. But this class has allowed me to branch out and become extremely more creative in my composing techniques. Now, as a “Real Straight”, I can continue to use all that I’ve learned and rock my style for the rest of my life!
