The Day I Graduate College The day I graduate college will be a beautiful day. The sun will be shining, graduates will be strolling along campus in their black robes and caps, everyone will be happy. Excitement will be in the air. This is a time for opportunity, a time of growing and taking risks. What is risk though? We take small risks each day, these risks teach us how to do things right, they are what we learn from, how we grow. When we’re in college, we take small risks, but we feel secure because we are surrounded by thousands of others who are just like us, and supported by elders who can carefully direct us in the right direction. Once we graduate however, we are alone. What will I do? How will I survive? Questions race through my head. This day will be wonderful, but what happens next? A week goes by; it’s time to grow up. It’s time to find a job to support myself and find out who I am. Who am I? Am I still the same person I was in college? I feel the same, but I’m no longer a student. No longer am I surrounded by my friends, no longer will I get financial support. It’s time to make it on my own. I begin my search. I’m looking for any form of opportunity I can find. I look at my resume, it says I graduated from East Lake High school in 2009. I attended Florida State University from 2009-2013 and graduated with a degree in Editing, Writing, and Media, and minored in communications. I was a member of a social women’s fraternity Pi Beta Phi where I participated in numerous philanthropies and performed community service. I was a division 1 student athlete, and a member of the Women In Leadership Development group. My resume also lists my job experience for future employers. I began work as a lifeguard in 2007. I worked for the Greater Palm Harbor YMCA, and Eastlake Woodlands Country Club. I was certified in CPR, first aid, oxygen and AED administration, and I worked as a private and group swim instructor for all ages. I worked with children with special needs for several years, and have a lot of training and experience working with people. So what kind of employers will be looking for someone like me? What kind of career am I looking for? I hope that one day I will be able to use my communication and writing and editing skills to share information with others. Although journalism isn’t offered at the institution I graduated from, I have obtained the necessary skills in order to be a successful journalist. I think about what I have learned and the skills I have acquired. To me it isn’t about finding a job that fits my major, it’s about finding a job that I will be successful with using the skills that I have. A successful career for me is expanding who I am as an editor and a writer.
